Priya Mathur, a devoted mother of two children and 15-year CalPERS Boarded member, asks for your vote in September.

Meet Priya

Priya grew up in a close-knit family that valued hard work, personal integrity, and a sense of responsibility for others.

She saw the importance of financial planning from an early age. When she was 13, a major health issue forced her father to leave his job. Her parents faced the challenge of supporting their kids, saving for college — and trying to save for their retirement. With hard work, frugal living, and careful planning, they managed to do it. As the mother of two children, Priya now applies these lessons to taking care of her own family.

A Career in Finance and Investments

Priya has dedicated her career to serving California, its communities, and public employees through sound financial and investment planning. After working through college and getting a degree in Economics, Priya started as a consultant with Public Financial Management, where she worked long days advising state and local governments on municipal bonds and capital investment planning. This gave her deep insight into the issues that government agencies struggle with to meet their fiscal needs.

As a Principal Financial Analyst at the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) since 1998, Priya has been responsible for developing BART's long-term capital infrastructure investment plan, including the use of general obligation bonds to fund infrastructure projects that benefit the community. For 20 years, she has been a proud member of AFSCME Local 3993.

While working full-time at BART, Priya went back to school at night and earned her MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

California public employees elected Priya to the CalPERS Board in 2003. Priya's investment expertise makes her valuable to the Board and to CalPERS members. CalPERS invests in a diversified portfolio of assets — stocks, bonds, private equity, real estate and infrastructure. Managing an investment portfolio the size and complexity of CalPERS' requires analyzing various forms of risk, understanding the relationship between CalPERS' assets and liabilities, and balancing members' current and future interests. Priya has the skills, experience, and judgment essential to serve in this role.
